Has trust in democracy survived the 2024 election year?

Has trust in democracy survived the 2024 election year? Tough question that we tried to adress in Lille at the Trust & Safety Forum of Forum INCYBER Europe (FIC).

In 2024, half of the globe faced elections. And as planned, half of the globe faced digital threats to democracy.

Disinformation, cyberattacks, foreign interference, false flag infiltration, election denial… The digital space multiplies the means to destabilize democraties and affects our trust in information and institutions. But lets not delude ourselves : the digital is always a tool and an amplifier, not the cause. It is because the trust is already eroded that digital attacks can be so efficient and undermine our democratic foundations.

EU, US, Romania… with Stéphanie LADEL and Lorena Martinez and under the moderation of John Salomon , we discused major 2024 elections and examples of digital destabilization.

There are several solutions. Regulation of course to implement transparency as a rue when it comes to political content. Fact cheacking and Education, to develop critical thinking. And a greater consideration of these threats by public authorities : let's stop burying our heads in the sand and provide a strong and quick response to digital destabilization (see judicial actions in Brazil and Romania)
